Community Service Committee Report

Fellow S.A.L. members,

Community service is about building a stronger community whether in your neighborhood, city or state.

Every community needs its citizens to be involved in order to move it from an okay place to live to good, even to a great place to live or just simply amazing.

In my opinion I think it would be fair to say that most of us live in a good community. Now just imagine how our communities could be so much better if everyone there was more involved in the neighborhood watch, local PTA, Community Advisory Committee or Community patrol.

Remember Community Service creats greater community pride and elevates the standards of living. Community Service helps to positively affect someone’s life in your neighborhood.

The opportunities to serve your community are boundless.

You can adopt a park or trail where Volunteers agree to remove trash once a month, and report safety hazards and concerns to Parks and Recreation. By adopting you enhance the trail experience for others in your community.
Or you could adopt a garden where Volunteers are in charge of planting and maintaining flowerbeds in parks, right-of-ways and medians.
The City-wide Cleanup begins early May.
Teach Kids To Achieve Goals, Build Relationships & Develop Confidence! Through mentoring.

Shelters around your town always need volunteers to help serve the meals.

You could hold a bike safety course for the kids in your neighborhood to show them basic bike upkeep, maintence and safety.

You could get envolved in your neighborhood watch program, local PTA, Community Advisory Committee or Community patrol and if you don’t already have one there get one started.

You could have your place of employment, adopt a stretch of the higway or road outside your place of businness.

Remember Community Service is also used by college-bound high school seniors as a way of attracting colleges to accept them. Though technically not a requirement for acceptance for that specific college, most colleges generally use community service as an unofficial college requirement for acceptance, though some colleges prefer work experience over community service. The best overall community service hours is generally around 300 hours or more. Some colleges also require their students to volunteer specific number of hours to graduate and receive their degree.

The opportunities to serve your community are boundless. With involvement our communities will grow and blossum from a good community to a great community to just simply amasing. Only you can decide upon time, interest and where you feel you can make the difference or what you can do.

All I ask is that you get involved and volunteer today!

As always be sure to record and report every thing that you do throughout the year. The Consolidated Squadron Report Form will be sent to Detachment Headquarters. If you want to preview this three (3) part carbonless form it can be found on the web page www.sal.legion.org. The Consolidated Squadron Report Form is not only to report what your officers have done but all your members.

Be sure to get your Consolidated Squadron Report Form filled out and sent to your Detachment Headquarters as soon as possible.

On behalf of the National Community Service Committee, I would like to thank you for your continued service to your community, state and nation.

Yours in Service for God and Country,
Kevin Collier
Member of the National Community Service Committee
